The University Of Alabama And Its History Till The Present Days

The University of Alabama, the state of Alabama’s oldest public university, is a senior comprehensive doctoral-level institution. The University was established by the constitutional provision under statutory mandates and authorizations. Its mission is to advance the intellectual and social condition of the people of the state through quality programs of teaching, research and service.
In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a “seminary of learning.” President Monroe signed the enabling act for statehood on March 2, 1819, and Alabama was officially admitted to the Union on Dec. 14, 1819, and a second township added to the grant. On December 18, 1820, the seminary was established officially and named “The University of the State of Alabama.”
The university opened in April 1831 with four faculty and 94 students. Freshmen took Latin, Greek, geography, English grammar, history, reading, orthography or composition, and mathematics. The first years of the university did not run smoothly, however. The first president, Alva Woods brought with him a New Englander’s sense of strict duty and discipline that clashed with the students’ southern frontier sense of freedom. As a result, numerous disciplinary problems and conflicts occurred between students and faculty members, including an incident in 1836 in which more than 40 students were suspended for attending a circus.
After 1831, The University of Alabama has been centered around supporting the desires of its students. That commitment is reflected in an informative undertaking that shows a devoted obligation to showing greatness and service to society.
